Ladder Safety

Learn why ladder falls happen, how to choose the right ladder, inspect it before use, set up an extension ladder and a stepladder, climb and work safely, and handle special situations like power lines, wind, truck decks and fixed ladders, in about 45 minutes.

  • Certificate, valid 36 months
Ladder Safety is for everyone who uses a portable ladder at work, on construction sites, in shops and warehouses, on leases and at plants across Canada. It covers why most ladder falls happen from a few steps up, how to choose the right ladder for the job (type, length, CSA grade and load rating, and materials, with fibreglass near electricity), how to inspect a ladder before every use and take a damaged one out of service, how to set up an extension or straight ladder (the 4 to 1 angle, a metre above the landing, secured top and bottom) and a stepladder (fully open, spreaders locked, never on the top rungs), and how to climb and work safely: three points of contact, your belt buckle between the rails, one person at a time, and tools on your belt or a rope. It finishes with power lines, wind and ice, truck decks, fixed ladders, and when a ladder job calls for fall protection. You sort what went wrong in real ladder incidents, match the right ladder to each job, find the defects on damaged ladders, set up a ladder to get onto a roof, find the wrong ways stepladders are used around a house, decide what is safe and what is not, and work through a valve job on a lease. You check your understanding after each module and finish with a 25-question exam. Pass with 80% and your certificate is issued right away, valid for 36 months. Every screen is narrated, with captions and a full transcript. The course comes with a one-page ladder inspection checklist to use before each climb. This course is general awareness training about portable ladders. It does not replace your employer's procedures, the ladder maker's instructions, or fall protection training where your work calls for it.
