Mobile Equipment and Spotter Training

Learn how people on foot get hurt around mobile equipment, what an operator can't see, how to move safely on a busy site, when a spotter is needed and where a spotter stands, the standard hand signals, and how to spot by radio, at night and through a handoff, in about 65 minutes.

Mobile Equipment and Spotter Training is for everyone who works on foot around haul trucks, loaders, excavators, vac trucks, pickers and other mobile equipment, on leases, in pits and on construction sites across Canada, and for the workers who act as spotters. It covers why mobile equipment kills (struck-by and caught-between), the blind spots around a machine, eye contact and moving safely on foot, and the danger zones of machines that swing, reach and lift. Then it trains you as a spotter: when a spotter is needed, what to agree with the operator before a move, where to stand (off to the side, in the operator's view, never between the machine and something solid), the seven standard hand signals, and how to spot by radio, at night and when one spotter hands over to another. You sort incidents into struck-by and caught-between, find the blind spots around a truck, find the hazards in a busy gravel pit, match each machine to its danger zone, decide which jobs need a spotter, choose where to stand for three real moves, name each hand signal and pick the right one as a move unfolds, and work through a tight lease at dusk. You check your understanding after each module and finish with a 25-question exam. Pass with 80% and your certificate is issued right away, valid for 36 months. Every screen is narrated, with captions and a full transcript. The course comes with a spotter practical evaluation form for employers, to confirm each worker's spotting on their own site and equipment. This course teaches the knowledge a spotter and a worker on foot need around mobile equipment. It does not on its own make you competent to spot: your employer confirms that with a practical evaluation on your site and equipment. It does not replace operator training, your site's traffic plan, or crane signal person training.
