PPE Fundamentals

Know where PPE fits in the hierarchy of controls, choose head, eye, face, hearing, respiratory, hand, foot and body protection for the hazard, read the markings, fit, inspect and care for your PPE, and get the right PPE when the job changes, in about 55 minutes.

  • 55 min
  • Online, on a phone or a computer
  • Professionally narrated
  • Certificate, valid 36 months
PPE Fundamentals is for every worker who wears personal protective equipment, and for the crew leads and supervisors who check it. It shows why PPE is always the last of the controls, what your employer and you each do, and how PPE is chosen from the hazard assessment, the task and the safety data sheet. It covers hard hats, including Type 2 hard hats with chin straps that many construction sites now require, safety glasses, goggles and face shields, hearing protection and how to fit it, the main kinds of respirator with fit testing and the seal check, gloves chosen for the hazard, safety footwear and its markings, high-visibility apparel and flame-resistant clothing, and how to inspect, fit, clean, store and retire PPE. You sort controls from PPE, match hazards to the protector made for them, find the PPE a safety data sheet calls for, find six PPE problems in a fabrication shop, decide which PPE is fit to wear, make the calls as a job changes from sweeping to solvent cleaning to cutting, check your understanding after each module, and finish with a 20-question exam. Pass with 80% and your certificate is issued right away, valid for 36 months. Every screen is narrated, with captions and a full transcript. This course provides general training in the selection, use and care of personal protective equipment. It does not replace your employer's PPE program, a respirator fit test, or training on the specific equipment you use.
