Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control

Know the difference between a hazard and a risk, where to look for hazards, how to rate a risk on a 5x5 matrix, the hierarchy of controls from elimination down to PPE, and what goes into a hazard assessment, in about 55 minutes.

  • 55 min
  • Online, on a phone or a computer
  • Professionally narrated
  • Certificate, valid 36 months
Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control covers what every worker, and every supervisor who leads a hazard assessment, should know: the difference between a hazard and a risk, the kinds of hazards, from safety and chemical to biological, ergonomic and psychosocial, where to look for them and how they are found, and why change is a common way for a hazard to get in. It shows how to rate a risk by severity and likelihood on the same 5x5 risk matrix TruStar Connect uses, how to choose controls in the order of the hierarchy, from elimination and substitution through engineering and administrative controls to personal protective equipment, which always comes last, what a hazard assessment holds and who takes part, when it must be done again, and the right to know, to take part and to refuse, with the differences between Canadian jurisdictions shown where they matter. You match hazards to their kinds, find six hazards at a busy loading dock, sort hazards into their bands on the risk matrix, put a re-roofing crew's controls in their place on the hierarchy, find answers in a real-looking hazard assessment for cutting and bevelling pipe, make the calls when the wind picks up and a crane is set up beside a pipe crew, check your understanding after each module, and finish with a 20-question exam. Pass with 80% and your certificate is issued right away, valid for 36 months. Every screen is narrated, with captions and a full transcript. This course provides general training in recognising hazards, assessing risk and choosing controls. It does not replace your employer's hazard assessments, the site-specific orientation and training you need for your job, or training in a formal risk assessment method.
